About the Location
The Alois Walter House is located in the Castroville National Historic Area just two blocks from Houston Square, the heart of historic Castroville. With in walking distance are antique and gift shops, four restaurants, a bakery and a coffee shop. Just across U.S. Highway 90 and still within walking distance is a, hardware store a meat market and the Landmark Inn State Historic Site. Since the house is within the historic district a number of historic houses are in close vicinity to the Alois Walter House. From the house's front door one can see the 1854 Anton and Catherine Scheider House and the 1847 Arcadius Steile House, which bears a Texas State Historical marker. Many other historic house are within blocks of the Walter House.
About Castroville
Castroville is one of the oldest towns in Texas. Founded in 1844 on the banks of the Medina River by Alsatian pioneers lead by Henri Castro the town has maintained much of its historic charm over the years. Over 90 historic structures exist within the old town, many of them within walking distance of the Alois Walter House.
